Branchburg Martial Arts, a TaeKwonDo Academy
TaeKwonDo

Taekwondo is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot.'

Tae = 'Foot' or 'to kick' or 'to jump'
K'won = 'Fist' or 'to strike or block with hand'
Do = 'The way of' or 'art'

Taekwondo is a very efficient unarmed self-defense system. Using proper body mechanics and reaction force, the Taekwondo practitioner can develop tremendous speed and power.

Taekwondo is also a beautiful art form which has evolved into an exciting sport. It is unique in that even as the student learns to kick, punch and block, the main focus is not actually fighting. Proper technique, focus and self control are taught and reinforced from the first lesson and through Black Belt. It’s because of this refrain from contact that injuries are almost non-existent. Every belt level in Taekwondo has exciting, challenging forms and self-defense techniques to learn and perfect. Classes are high energy, fun, and structured. A proven teaching method of positive reinforcement and goal setting will encourage every student to attain a higher personal standard. Every student participates at their own skill level, even as they increase it.

The Tenets of TaeKwonDo

COURTESY

Be polite to one another and use everyday manners. Say “please”, “thank you”, and “Yes Sir!” often. Distinguish the instructor from the student.

INTEGRITY

You must be able to define right actions and speech from wrong ones. Do the correct things because it is morally right, not because someone might be watching. Be honest.

PERSEVERANCE

Realize that setbacks in life are only challenges that need to be overcome. To have a “never give up” attitude, finish what you start.

SELF-CONTROL

Use your mind to control your body. Inside and outside of the Taekwondo academy mentally check what you say and do. Self control does not mean non-action; it is exercising restraint over one’s own impulses. Moderation is the key with all things.

INDOMITABLE SPIRIT

Be undefeatable. At all times be modest with your abilities, but confront injustice without fear or hesitation. Learn from your mistakes and use them as a tool to get to the next level.

The tenets are recited at the beginning of every Taekwondo class. These are words and concepts to live by, not to be forgotten when the students leave the workout floor.
